You don’t need silicon valley for world-class tech

Igor Dmochowski, Head of Developer Relations for Central and Eastern Europe at NVIDIA, said that Infobip Shift is already internationally recognized, and added that he is especially excited to meet local developers whose potential is increasingly visible on the global stage:

On the other hand, Ivan Brezak Brkan, the Director of Developer Experience at Infobip, said that Infobip Shift is rightfully the largest tech conference in this part of Europe and one of the largest in the world.

With increasing reports of layoffs and disruption in the global IT industry, networking is becoming even more important. A developer uses Copilot to write 30 lines of code in 10 minutes, but then spends 45 minutes reviewing it – checking for bugs, edge cases, and code that doesn’t match team standards.

The time saved during writing gets completely eaten up during validation. And this is exactly what happens repeatedly across teams trying to adopt AI at scale.

At the Pragmatic Summit, Laura Tacho (CTO at DX) shared some interesting research on AI in coding:

Almost 93% of developers use AI assistants every month, and about 27% of production code now comes from AI. Yet, despite all this, overall productivity has barely budged – staying around a 10% boost since AI tools arrived.

AI adoption is everywhere…

The numbers are clear:

• 92.6% of developers use AI coding assistants monthly
• 75% use them weekly
• 26.9% of production code contains AI-authored segments

84% of developers use AI tools, according to Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey. Adoption is now standard – the numbers are probably even bigger now.

…Yet work isn’t moving any quicker

The gap between adoption and productivity appears first as a trust problem.

46% of developers don’t fully trust the output, and that skepticism has a reason: reviewing AI-generated code frequently requires more effort than reviewing human-written one.

The DX AI Measurement Framework (published by vendor DX but structured as an industry standard) identifies this directly:

Code generated by AI may be less intuitive for human developers to understand, potentially creating bottlenecks when issues arise or modifications are needed.

This is why productivity hasn’t jumped. Developers might write code faster with AI, but they end up spending the same time checking, fixing, and making sense of what AI produces. In the end, the overall development cycle doesn’t get any shorter.

Sonar’s research confirms the pattern at scale: 42% of committed code now includes AI assistance, yet 96% of developers say they don’t fully trust AI-generated code. And this is exactly what we see: output is everywhere, but the confidence in it is not.

Why productivity has stalled?

That 10% productivity bump comes down to a workflow mismatch.

Teams started using AI to write code faster, but didn’t adjust how they review, test, or integrate it. In other words, writing got quicker, but everything that comes after stayed just as slow.

The DX research notes a broader context relevant here: most organizations see their biggest bottlenecks not in code generation, but:

In the outer loop, or in human factors like collaboration, alignment, and the ability to do deep, focused work.

AI addresses one specific problem, and that’s code-writing speed. But, as we can see, the overall development cycle has other constraints.

Teams that actually see productivity gains from AI usually do two things: they figure out exactly where AI adds value, and they tweak their workflows to make the most of it. Teams that just deploy AI without changing how they work? They get adoption, but no real boost in productivity.

The 10% productivity ceiling sticks because the time spent validating AI-written code cancels out the speed gains. Most teams focus on writing faster, but few have optimized for faster validation.

It’s an obvious obstacle, but maybe also an opportunity.

I was probably the most skeptical person about AI, but when I started using it, I realized it’s just a tool.

Some even say, “It’s still not good enough for me. I’ll probably use it in a couple of years once it matures.”

But for many, AI is now essential: it speeds up tasks, supports research, and even offers crash courses in new technologies.

Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay.

AI opens a world of endless possibilities

Developers see AI’s potential in all sorts of ways. Some use it like a supercharged search engine to dig up code documentation. Others point to breakthroughs in medicine, like AI-assisted cancer screening or discovering new cures.

Before, you could only imagine trying something – now I can spend 20–30 minutes and see what’s possible.

DeepMind’s AlphaFold, which finally solved the decades-old protein folding problem, was a standout. “For me, that was the first time I thought, Oh man, this is really something.”

… and it isn’t here to take your job

Worried about AI taking over your job? Most developers aren’t. Sure, it can handle repetitive tasks, but it can’t take responsibility. “AI will never ask me why, only humans can challenge, understand, and question,” said a senior developer.

The general agreement: engineers, mathematicians, and doctors aren’t going anywhere. AI is a tool to help us, not a replacement for us. But, fears persist outside the office too: many worry that society is becoming too reliant on AI, leading to a loss of critical thinking.

Curiosity is the best defense against fear.

Still, there’s hope. Curiosity, participants agreed, is the antidote to fear. Engaging with AI directly (experimenting, learning, and testing its limits) reduces anxiety and keeps humans in control.

According to the 2024 DORA Report, 76% of developers now incorporate generative AI into their daily workflows, while 89% of organizations are making its adoption a priority. Developers use GenAI tools mostly for faster code generation, creating better documentation, and summarizing information.

Such widespread adoption of Gen AI tools among software developers warranted another DORA report dedicated solely to the Impact of Generative AI in Software Development. The DORA research team conducted a large-scale survey of over 36,000 software professionals, analyzing how they use GenAI tools and the impact on their teams, organizations, productivity, satisfaction, and well-being.

The story about the benefit of adopting AI for individuals is largely favorable, but like any good story, has some wrinkles.

DORA Impact of Generative AI Report

The most obvious benefit is the increase in productivity: when an individual’s AI adoption increases by 25%, it increases productivity by approximately 2.1%.

Here comes the wrinkles part: researchers expected that automating manual, repetitive, toilsome tasks would result in more valuable work, in line with the value proposition for adopting AI.

Research data, however, suggested that increased AI adoption may have the opposite effect –
reducing reported time spent doing valuable work, while time spent on toilsome work appears to be unaffected.

Researchers also found that an increase in AI adoption negatively impacts delivery stability, which may be due to the larger batch size of AI-assisted code, which makes it harder to code review.

More Flow State, But…

Researchers were particularly interested in investigating whether developers’ well-being is affected by the rapid adoption and use of gen AI. They found that developers who use gen AI more report:

• More time in a flow state,
• Higher overall job satisfaction,
• Increased productivity
• Less burnout.

Surprisingly, developers who use Gen AI more extensively report no difference in time spent on toilsome work and less time spent on valuable work.

As researchers, we found it paradoxical that developers spending less time on work they find valuable would also report more time in flow, more satisfaction, more productivity, and less burnout.

Five Strategies to Maximize Generative AI’s Value for Developers

Given these paradoxical findings, researchers came up with five strategies for organizations to ensure AI amplifies developers’s value

Allow the Use of Generative AI Across the Development and Delivery Process

Developers who prioritized the utilitarian value of their work—emphasizing their individual impact on the world— perceived gen AI as a clear value booster. Allowing the use of gen AI in as many development tasks as possible may increase the perceived utilitarian value of development work by enabling them to do more work faster.

Recognize the Effort Involved in Using Generative AI

Developers who prioritized the reputational value of their work— emphasizing the benefits of being
recognized for having completed work—perceived gen AI as a potential competitor who would take credit for the work partially performed by them. That is easily solved by recognizing that working with AI tools still requires labor on the part of the developer.

Present Generative AI as a Learning Opportunity

Some developers worry that AI might devalue their expertise by making certain skills less relevant. Generative AI introduces new skills, such as prompt engineering, that will become increasingly valuable. Positioning AI as a tool for skill development across the software lifecycle can help developers adapt and remain engaged with evolving industry standards.

Reward Work Outcomes, Not Just Time Spent

Developers who prioritized the economic value of their work—emphasizing the pay associated with their labor—had mixed feelings that, by doing it in a fraction of the time, AI would make their work less, potentially making their work less valuable. some developers expressed concerns about whether
increases in individual productivity would cause reductions in workforce or paid hours.

Allow Developers to Opt-Out of AI for Tasks They Enjoy

For developers who derive personal satisfaction from coding, generative AI can feel like a disruption rather than an enhancement. Since AI adoption is not mandatory, companies should support developers who prefer to complete certain tasks manually.
